En sus inicios, apareció en algunas producciones con su madre. Su primer trabajo de cine fue cuando interpretó a la joven seductora de Warren Beatty en "Sahmpoo" (1975) de Hal Ashby.

"La gente quiere que diga que estoy asqueada de interpretar a Leia y que eso echó a perder mi vida. Pero si mi vida era tan fácil de arruinar, entonces merecía ser arruinada", dijo en una entrevista en 2015 para The Daily Beast la actriz, quien también padeció trastorno bipolar.

Fisher reveló que mantuvo un romance con Harrison Ford durante el rodaje de "Star Wars", en una irónica recreación en la vida real de lo sucedido entre sus personajes de Han Solo y la princesa Leia.
