Naasón Joaquín García inherited an empire built on the faith of one million members of La Luz del Mundo church and at the same time, he has established several political connections and sympathies. After leading the religious cult for five years, Naasón Joaquín has created relationships with at least three Jalisco governors.

But he has also been linked to leaders and members of at least five political parties, including governors, lawmakers, and even tried to establish a relationship with a former President and his first lady. Moreover, several members of his church are now Congress members.

Felipe Calderón & Margarita Zavala

Documents obtained by EL UNIVERSAL show that La Luz del Mundo invited former President Felipe Calderón to attend the church events but he always declined. In a letter sent to the President's office in February 2007, Calderón was invited to celebrate Samuel Joaquín Flores' 70th birthday; then he was invited to a funeral that same year; in August 2007, the former President was invited to a religious festivity, and in 2008 Calderón was invited to another birthday party.

Although he also declined the invitations, his wife, Margarita Zavala, attended at least two events hosted by La Luz del Mundo. She attended events in 2016 and 2018.

Joaquín García and his family have a vast list of political connections, especially in the state of Jalisco, including former governor Emilio González Márquez, PAN; Aristóteles Sandoval, PRI, and the current Governor, Enrique Alfaro, MC, who calls Naasón Joaquín “a friend”:

Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, known as El Bronco, the governor of Nuevo León and the former Veracruz governor, Javier Duarte, were linked to La Luz del Mundo after attending its events.

After Naasón was charged with sex crimes, the governor denied any relationship with the church leader:

Héctor Astudillo Flores, the governor of Guerrero, PRI, attended the 3rd Iberoamerican Summit of the Professionals and Business Leaders of Mexico (APEM), an organization linked to La Luz del Mundo. The event took place in May 2018 in Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero.

Kehila Ku Escalante, a federal lawmaker from the Movimiento Ciudadano party, is a member of the church. She attended the controversial event at the Palace of Fine Arts and also awarded Naasón Joaquín García for his “humanitarian search for national reconciliation.”

On May, 15 Naasón Joaquín attended a gala at the Palace of Fine Arts to celebrate his 50th birthday. The event was organized and paid for by senator Israel Zamora, from the Partido Verde party, whose father, Rogelio Zamora, is the head of the APEM, an organization linked to the church.

The event at the Palace of Fine Arts was also attended by Morena members, including Martí Batres and Sergio Mayer
