Suspected thieves of radioactive material arrested in Mexico

The Attorney General of the State of Querétaro, Alejandro Echeverría Cornejo, reported the arrest of two suspects of the robbery of a van transporting a radioactive iridium-192 source in the municipality of San Juan del Rio.

Echeverría Cornejo said that both suspects have criminal records and seemed unaware of the presence of the radioactive source in the van.

He added that the vehicle was sold in the State of Mexico to a subject who, in turn, sold it to another person.

The investigations on the whereabouts of the source, which is still missing, will continue.

The van was stolen in the previous weekend.
