On Saturday, Mexico implemented a new 10-digit dialing method throughout the country and announced that people in Mexico will have one year to learn and memorize the new method.

The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) is looking to simplify the dialing codes for landlines and cellphone numbers .

To dial landlines in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara you will have to add two digits before every phone number . To call someone in Mexico City add 55 before the number, add 81 to call someone in Monterrey , and 33 to call someone in Guadalajara .

In the rest of the country, people will have to add 3 digits ; for example, someone in Oaxaca will have to add 951 before dialing.

If you call someone in another city

, you will no longer have to add the 01 prefixes and you just have to dial the number as if it was a local number formed by 10 digits , including the city code and the local number.

And when you call cellphone numbers , you will no longer have to dial 044 and 045 before the phone number.

When calling numbers that start with 01 800 , the 01 prefix will no longer be necessary.

When people outside Mexico call cellphone numbers , they will no longer have to add 1 between the country code and the cellphone number.

No changes will be made to emergency numbers .
