Mexico charges judge linked to cartel with illicit enrichment

On November 29, a judge bound over judge Isidro Avelar Gutiérrez to trial for illicit enrichment for MXN $12,020,474.06.

Another judge granted the Anti-Corruption Attorney's Office two months and a half to finish the investigation.

Meanwhile, the judge linked to the infamous Jalisco New Generation Cartel ( CJNG ) will remain in jail .

On November 22, agents from the Attorney General's Office arrested magistrate judge Isidro Avelar Gutiérrez , who has been linked to the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel ( CJNG )

The judge has been accused of receiving bribes from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and was suspended without pay from the Judiciary in May 2019.

Through a statement, the Federal Judicial Council announced that the magistrate judge had been transported to Mexico City and that his arrest was the result of a lawsuit filed on May 24 for “asset irregularities and additional income.”

The president of the Supreme Court , Arturo Zaldívar , emphasized that the Judiciary does not tolerate corruption .

Just last week, the U.S. Treasury Department said the judge is allegedly linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the cartel led by Nemesio Oseguera known as " El Mencho " and might be implicated in money laundering .

At the same time, the Financial Intelligence Unit , ( UIF ) announced that the judge 's bank accounts have been blocked. The UIF also found a deposit for MXN $70 million, which does not match his salary.

Moreover, back in 2017 , the Treasury Department accused Avelar Gutiérrez of accepting bribes from the CJNG and its financial branch “ Los Cuinis ,” a criminal organization he worked closely with, by making decisions to benefit the drug cartels and its members.

In 2014, the magistrate judge ordered the release of Rogelio González Pizaña , known as “Kelín” or “ Z-2 ”, one of the founding members of the Zetas Cartel.

The same judge was also responsible for keeping José Manuel Mireles Valverde in jail. Mireles led an armed civilian group that aimed to defend their community against drug cartels .
