US embassy in Mexico homages Javier Valdez on Facebook

A month after the death of the journalist, the embassy posted the image of Valdez with a black ribbon in sign of mourning

The United States embassy in Mexico posted a photo of journalist Javier Valdez in its Facebook profile picture, a month after his murder when he was heading to the offices of the weekly journal Río Doce , in the state of Sinaloa .

The picture shows the American flag in color and the image of Valdez with a black ribbon as a sign of mourning .

The co-founder of Semanario Río Doce and one of the most prominent journalists on drug dealing in Sinaloa , Javier Valdez Cárdenas, was murdered by armed men in a car, who shot him 12 times with two types of handguns.

According to Juan José Ríos Estavillo , the state prosecutor, Valdez Cárdenas, 50 years old, was going to the Río Doce offices, in the Jorge Almada neighborhood, when he received a direct attack. He informed that on the Aquiles Serdán Avenue the assailers abandoned the car, which is being investigated by prosecutors in search of evidence .

Last May 15 , US ambassador to Mexico, Roberta Jacobson condemned the slaying of Javier Valdez.

In her Twitter account , the diplomat reminded that he was the 5th journalists murdered this year and the 6th in Sinaloa since 2000 .

“Javier Valdez won the International Award for Freedom of Speech in 2011. He was murdered today. #TruthIsNotKilledByKillingJournalists”
