Mexican filmmaker and three-time Oscar winner, Alejandro González Iñárritu presented Best Director Award at the 69th Directors Guild of America Award to La La Land director, Damien Chazelle, and took the opportunity to express his thoughts on the current politics of the U.S.

It was before presenting Best Director award to Damien Chazelle, that Iñárritu raised his voice against Trump’s politics, “We all know the story being written now is really, really bad,” he said. “Actually it’s a bad remake of one of the worst stories of the last century. The only way we will win and recoup a strong narrative is by telling good complex and truthful human stories,” he said. “No alternative facts or statistics will defeat that.”

Trump has never been keen on the Mexican filmmaker. When Iñárritu was presented with Best Director and Best Film for Birdman in 2015, Trump posted in his twitter account: “The Oscars were a great night for Mexico & why not—they are ripping off the US more than almost any other nation.”, he added: “What ever happened to the good old days of The Academy Awards. This show is an insult to the past, just plain bad!”

For his part, during last year’s edition of the Oscars, Iñárritu opted for equality in his acceptance speech for Best Director for The Revenant: “very lucky to be here tonight, but unfortunately, many others haven’t had the same luck.” “There is a line in the film that [Glass says] to his mixed-race son, ‘They don’t listen to you, they just see the color of your skin,’” he continued. “So what a great opportunity to our generation to really liberate ourselves from all prejudice and, you know, this tribal thinking, and make sure for once and forever that the color of the skin become as irrelevant as the length of our hair.”
