With 264 votes in favor, 58 against and two null votes, the national council of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party elected Alejandra Barrales as party leader for the 2014-2017, after the consecutive resignations of previous holders Carlos Navarrete and Agustín Basave.
The former head of Education of Mexico City and Senator on leave took the oath for the position she will cover until October 2017.
Her closest competitor, Pablo Gómez, received only 58 votes. Gómez is one of the founders of the party.
