Suspected murderer of Finnish activist arrested in Sinaloa
Jyri Jaakola and Alberta Cariño Trujillo were shot to death in Oaxaca in 2010.
The Office of the Attorney General reported the arrest of the suspected killer of Finnish activist Jyri Jaakola and Mexican Alberta Cariño Trujillo, who were shot to death on April 27, 2010, while traveling in a convoy near the village of Sabana, in the municipality of San Juan Cópala, Oaxaca.
The alleged murderer was arrested by officers from the Criminal Investigations Agency and Interpol in the municipality of Escuinapa, Sinaloa.
The suspect, who was not identified, will be taken to a federal prison near the municipality of Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca.
Jyri Antero Jaakkola, born on February 11, 1977, was a Finnish human rights activist. He was on his way to San Juan Copala as a human rights observer when he was killed. Cariño Trujillo, a local activist, was also killed and more than ten people were wounded.
Jaakkola was widely known as a central figure in several alternative movements in Finland. He was involved with S/V Estelle, a sailboat operated on fair trade principles, and sailed to Angola with the ship in 2002.
