Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto instructed the Ministry of the Interior to open a wide debate, with the participation of specialists, in order to define the public policies regarding cannabis use.

In the framework of the IV Sumemos Causas (Joining Causes) Forum, Peña Nieto expressed that he is personally against the legalization of cannabis, but that does not contravene his conviction to open a wide debate.

Peña Nieto added that the use of the drug, after the determination of the Supreme Court of Justice to allow four people to produce and consume cannabis for entertainment, must be tackled by the State as a whole.

He added that the debate should involve lawmakers and that the Supreme Court indicates that Congress and the Executive branch must decide the future actions on the topic.

"That's why it seems to me that this is a task we must undertake as a State. It is not on a single field, for a single Power. It is a task that we must undertake jointly in the Executive and Legislative branches to really get a much clearer definition from this discussion, these forums, to enable us to come with a sharper and more accurate decision," he said.
