With 10,000 baseball fans and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City as witnesses, Mexican Jorge Cantú was named the champion of the Home Run Derby in El Zócalo, after connecting a home-run and defeating Venezuelan Frank Díaz, in a sudden death finale due to the lack of balls.

Cantu blasted the ball through the central field, to the exultation of the people in the central esplanade of the Mexican capital.

The 155 homers connected in the first two rounds left the organization with no balls, and they decided that the winner would be determined in a sudden death manner.

Cantú hit 16 homers in the first round and 14 in the second while Díaz had only one round with 31 homers.

Cantu received a check for US$3,240, which was donated to a foundation.
