Typhoon Trami drenches Japan

A powerful typhoon headed towards Japan’s main island on Sunday forcing the cancellation or suspension of airline and train services and causing power outages and evacuations from areas still recovering from a typhoon last month.

Airlines canceled more than 930 flights, public broadcaster NHK said. And most of local trains and bullet trains in western areas suspended operations on Sunday, operator West Japan Railway said.

Japan issued evacuation orders and warnings to about 700,000 households in southern and western Japan and more than 300,000 households have suffered power outages in southern Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures , said NHK, adding nearly 50 people had been injured in Okinawa and Kagoshima.

The typhoon threatened heavy rains , strong winds , and landslides on the northern-most main island of Hokkaido , the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The island was hit by a deadly earthquake last month.

The typhoon, rated by Tropical Storm Risk as a category 1 , the lowest on a five-point scale, killed two people and injured almost 130, public broadcaster NHK said.

Another two people were missing, it said, and almost 400,000 households were without powe r.

, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years , brought some of the highest tides since a 1961 typhoon and flooded Kansai airport near Osaka, taking it out of service for days.
