North Korea's ambassador to Mexico, Kim Hyong Gil , left Mexico today in a flight to La Havana , Cuba , where he was instructed to strengthen the North Korean embassy.

Kim Hyong Gil is traveling on AM453 Aeromexico Mexico City to Havana Flight.

The diplomat was not able to leave the country before because flights to Cuba were not restored after Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean.

On Thursday, September 7, Mexico's Government expelled the Ambassador of North Korea in response to Pyongyang 's latest nuclear test. President Enrique Peña Nieto instructed full compliance of the United Nations Security Resolutions and declared Kim Hyong Gil “ persona non grata ,” giving him 72 hours to leave the country, a deadline met on Sunday afternoon.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister

, Luis Videgaray , has stressed that Mexico was not breaking diplomatic ties with North Korea, but that Mexico “wanted to send a clear message of absolute rejection ” of the recent tests.
