On January 22, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said authorities are investigating one possible case of coronavirus in the border state of Tamaulipas.

“It’s being dealt with,” López Obrador said. He added that a second potential case of coronavirus in Mexico had been ruled out.

New coronavirus strain behind China pneumonia outbreak

Later, Gloria Molina, the Health Minister of Tamaulipas confirmed that a 57-year-old man might be infected with the virus. The man is a Doctor in Molecular Biology and university professor who traveled to Wuhan, China on December 25, 2019. The man arrived in Mexico City on January 10 and flew to Reynosa a day later. His symptoms started on January 13.

The government official said the results will be ready between 36 and 72 hours, so it is yet to be confirmed if the university professor is infected with the new coronavirus and added that the man isolated himself since he knows the risks and was “concerned about its transmission, he isolated himself, and told him contacts.”

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has said that Mexico has the necessary tests to confirm the presence of the new virus in the country.

While in China, the man visited his family, wasn’t near sick people, and his family in China did not contract coronavirus. He was not in touch with animals and visited a few cities close to Wuhan.

The man reported that he started coughing on January 13; nasal fluid started on January 16. He feels no pain in the throat or chest.

Mexico’s Institute for the Epidemiological Diagnoses and References (INDRE) is analyzing the samples.

Doctors prescribed oseltamivir and isolation for five days until the man’s condition improves. Authorities searched his office for other possible patients.

"The 57-year-old doctor was diagnosed with Adenovirus/Rhinovirus, a common cold," she assured.

However, Mexican authorities have reinforced sanitary measures at airports with direct flights from China: Monterrey, Cancun, and Guadalajara. Since January 9, it advised travelers not to travel to China unless it was necessary.

So far, five countries have reported 283 confirmed coronavirus cases. China confirmed 278; while Japan, Thailand, South Korea, and the U.S. have reported one each.

CNN obtained “disturbing” images of the Wuhan market, where it is believed that this new coronavirus originated.

On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization was informed of a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China.
