Famed specialized art blog, Hyperallergic, ranked Mónica Mayer’s exhibition “When in Doubt Ask, a Retro-collective Exhibition” as one of the fifteen’s world’s best of 2016.

The exhibition was hosted by the University Museum of Contemporary Art ( MUAC), in Mexico City earlier last year, and was curated by Karen Cordero Reiman with works from Mexican artist, art-critic, professor and feminist activist, Mónica Mayer, (Mexico 1954), who has taken the feminist discourse to center stage since the 1970s.

Hyperallergic highlights the relevance of the feminist discourse in Mayer’s exhibition in a country with major gender-based violence crimes. Her discourse surfaces in controversial pieces like “Clothesline”, originally from 1978 and which has been “activated” constantly in different venues ever since. “Clothesline” was conceived as a medium that documented viewers experiences of the city, in terms of violence, unsafety, identity and harassment by asking direct questions that visitors answer and leave hanging as one would with clothes in a typical clothesline at home.
