The Mexican Episcopate Conference reported Friday the death of Monsignor Girolamo Prigione in Alessandria, Italy.

Prigione became the apostolic delegate of the Vatican in Mexico in February 1978, and became the first nuncio, a title akin to that of ambassador, when the diplomatic ties between the Holy See and Mexico were restored in 1992.

He retired in April 1997.
