A Zumba teacher was murdered in her own apartment in the neighborhood of Paseos Kabah of Cancún, increasing to three the number of women killed this month, and to five since October 18.

According to an official report this morning, the victim's students found her body.

The woman has been identified, extra officially, as Elsy Sánchez, who worked in her own residence. It has been reported that she was strangled and that it cannot be ruled out that she was sexually assaulted, but the authorities have not disclosed her identity or cause of death.

On November 1, Abril López Valencia was beaten to death near the hotel where se worked, and her body was found two days later. The authorities say that her former boyfriend César Castillo confessed to her killing.

On November 2, 18-year-old Paloma Balam Poot was also presumably killed by her boyfriend, municipal police officer Néstor Orlando Cel Carrillo, who is on the lam.

Previously, 19-year-old Karen Carrasco was found on October 26, lying naked under dense underbrush. She had been beaten, raped and then killed. And on October 18, 24-year-old Rebecca Rivera Neri was found beaten and strangled, with her face nearly shattered by the blows.

The government of Quintana Roo has been reluctant to consider these crimes as feminicides, opting to qualify them as "violent murders" and "crimes of passion," and not particularly focused on gender.
