Mummy lowered from the Pico de Orizaba

The authorities in the municipality of Ciudad Serdán located and retrieved the third mummified corpse reported in the Pico de Orizaba during the year, while the other two remain in the mountain.

The mummy remains in the municipal forensic service after the autopsy was performed.

According to preliminary results, the body is of a 25-year-old male, who died some 15 years ago.

The body was wearing a white shirt, pants and a gray sweater with black stripes. No shoes were found and the clothes are not appropriate for the cold weather in the area.

The authorities consider that he could be the pilot of a plane that crashed into the Citlaltépetl on 1999.

Hilario Aguilar, president of the Alpine Mexican Group, gave some details about the rescue labor for the mummified body.

He explained that weather conditions were highly favorable and that some climbers made the discovery some time ago and reported it to the authorities, who immediately began to prepare the 17,000 feet tall mountain.

The ascent began shortly after 6:00 a.m. and they spotted the remains at 3:00 p.m. The recuperation labor began at 7:00 p.m., with the help of staff from the Mexican Red Cross, Grupo Delta, Grupo Alpino and the municipal civil protection.

"A tunnel was made below because he was in an ice plate, which was broken with an ice ax at the bottom and the sides in order to not hurt the remains," he said.
