"El águila y la serpiente" que publicó EL UNIVERSAL
Entre el 2 de enero de 1927 y el 20 de mayo de 1928, EL UNIVERSAL publicó cerca de 60 entregas de la novela “El águila y la serpiente” del escritor mexicano Martín Luis Guzmán.

Eran textos autónomos, que aparecían semana a semana, incluso a veces aparecieron en días continuos, profusamente ilustradas por Gómez Linares. Y casi siempre ocupaban la primera plana de la tercera sección dominical.

Desde Madrid, España, donde Martín Luis Guzmán vivió muchos años en el exilio, el escritor mandaba semana a semana, tanto a EL UNIVERSAL como a “La Prensa” de San Antonio, Texas, sus colaboraciones de esa novela que se llamaría “Bajo la sombra de Pancho Villa” y acabó publicado con el nombre de “El águila y la serpiente”, en Madrid, España, en 1928.

Esta historia que aborda la Revolución Mexicana, especialmente el periodo que va de 1913 a 1915 y tiene como base el relato autobiográfico de Martín Luis Guzmán en la lucha armada al lado de Francisco Villa, tiene ya una edición crítica que fue coordinada por la investigadora Susana Quintanilla.

Se trata de la edición crítica de “El águila y la serpiente” que cuenta con edición, estudio y notas de Susana Quintanilla. La obra publicada por la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua en su colección Clásicos de la Lengua Española, convierte a Martín Luis Guzmán en el primer escritor mexicano en entrar a esta colección de grandes obras literarias.

La investigadora del departamento de Investigaciones Educativas del Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Avanzados (Cinvestav), asegura que al igual que otras grandes obras de la literatura mexicana del siglo XX, “El águila y la serpiente” de Martín Luis Guzmán, tuvo como antecedente inmediato su publicación a través de entregas a la sección dominical del periódico EL UNIVERSAL.
