This year, the 61st edition of Mexico’s prestigious Ariel Awards will take place at the National Film Library and not at the Palace of Fine Arts , as was the custom. Alfonso Cuarón ’s critically acclaimed Roma is in the lead with 15 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Photography, and Best Actress .

Other Mexican films that received multiple nominations were Alonso Ruizpalacios’ ‘Museo,’ and ‘Las niñas bien,’ by Alejandra Márquez Abella.

During the announcement of the nominees, the chairman of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (AMACC) , Ernesto Contreras , mentioned that cultural life was faced with a dire situation in Mexico’s new administration.

However, he claimed that he had met with members of the Culture Ministry and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) to develop parallel activities related to cinematography.
