On Tuesday, Mexico’s largest railroad operator said that at least seven people were killed and more than 36 were injured after a bus collided with one of its cargo trains in the northern border state of Sonora in the early morning hours.

, which is owned by mining and transport company , said in a statement that the bus tried to pass a train which led to the collision. Most of the bus passengers were workers on their way to work in the Yaqui community of Vícam .

In January 2018 , five people were killed when a cargo train belonging to Kansas City Southern’s Mexican unit and transporting grain derailed in a municipality in the State of Mexico .

According to the Health Ministry, those injured are being attended at the Ciudad Obregón General Hospital in which 32 persons are receiving medical attention, while four are attended at the local Social Security Mexican Institute .

Emergency protocols activated

The Health Minister Enrique Clausen Iberri added that upon knowing the situation, the emergency protocols were activated and in coordination with the Public Security Ministry , they sent a helicopter with personnel of Salud Sonora for attending the situation.

“In coordination with Salud Sonora and the State Public Security, IMSS , Red Cross , Cajeme Firemen , and other corporations. We worked in coordination, where in addition we sent land ambulances and one air ambulance to ease the transportation and attention to the affected,” he stressed.
