The supply of poinsettias (“ Nochebuena ”) during this holiday season is now guaranteed since 19 million plants have been produced, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) .

The government body pointed out that the new administration will look to optimize the production of raw materials in the agricultural sector. By implementing added value chains meant to strengthen productive activities Mexico’s new government aims to turn the agricultural sector into one of the country’s main driving forces in terms of economic and social development, with direct benefits for producers and their families.

Small producers will receive support for the technification of crops, the betterment of plants, and market opening, which will in turn increase returns and improve the life of producer families.

The cultivation of poinsettias is more efficient in systems for protected agriculture – greenhouses, shadecloth, and micro-tunnels -. In Mexico, poinsettias are cultured in a surface of more than 660 acres, with the participation of around 990 small producers and their families, each handling an average of 0.49 acres .

According to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) , poinsettia production will be valued at around 634 million pesos this year .

Some of its main producers can be found in the state of Morelos, with 5.79 million plants; Michoacán, 3.97 million; Mexico City, 3.59 million; Puebla, 2.93 million; Jalisco, 1.73 million, and the State of Mexico, with 1.1 million .

The SIAP indicated that women’s participation in poinsettia production was of over 14% , with prices ranging from 25 to 60 pesos per plant .
