LIZA

is a device that makes the diagnosis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases ( STDs ) easier, through a urine test.

Ishtar Rizzo

, the co-founder of LIZA , explained that the Mexican start-up is trying to contribute to improving sexual health.

Ishtar, one of the 35 young people awarded by the MIT Technology Review , said that she is looking to offer people the possibility to access a quick test to detect the STD in a non-invasive way.

She indicated that the chlamydia diagnosis is relatively simple but invasive and sometimes painful .

“The device created by LIZA presents an innovating design that allows to comfortably collect the initial urine fraction and discard the rest, without having to interrupt the urination or any other inconveniences,” she said.

She added that this sample goes through different membranes that concentrate the epithelial cells that had been carried along with the urine , it separates them and detects the presence of the bacteria that causes the disease .

She mentioned that the purpose of this device is that it's sold in every pharmacy , just like pregnancy tests, so that people can have a quick , painless , and private diagnosis .

She considers that the use of devices such as LIZA could eliminate the barrier that prevents people from getting tested for STDs since they are afraid of the social stigma.
