Former Mexico president admits pact against his own party in last General Election

Former conservative president Vicente Fox Quesada from the National Action Party (PAN) (2000-2006) revealed in an interview with Stephen Woodman and Duncan Tucker from the Viva México podcast, how he pacted with sitting president Enrique Peña Nieto from ruling Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) in support of the three major reforms that Mexico has undergone for the past administrations.

When asked about the regrets, if any, Fox had as regards the coming back of PRI to power he openly said that, “Part of democracy is the alternation in power … I do not regret that the PRI came back in the person or the leadership of Enrique Peña Nieto. I had an agreement with him, I even backed him up against the candidate of my own party, and I did it because he committed personally with me that he will move with three profound reforms for Mexico: the Education Reform, the Fiscal Reform or Tax Reform and the Energy Reform.”

When asked about his views about left presidential suitor Andrés Manuel López Obrador from the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) , Fox firmly said,“He will not win.”, and described López Obrador as “The populist, the demagogue, the false prophet.” who in Fox’s views very similarly compares to other “demagogues of Latin America” who like to “ present themselves like sheep when they are really wolves.”

By the end of the interview, Fox noted the challenges of the current Peña Nieto administration: “Mexico still has two cancer tumors… corruption and violence.”

This is the first interview where former president Fox, who became famous by winning over the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) 17 years ago, openly speaks about his support of the now ruling PRI party who came back to power in the 2012 General Election .
