Juan Pablo Badillo, attorney of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, said that his client is being "physically and mentally tortured," because the Altiplano prison authorities do not let him sleep.
"I am loudly awakened every two hours at night. They are turning me into a zombie, they do not let me sleep," Badillo quoted “El Chapo” as saying in a radio interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva.
Badillo said he could only speak with his client for about 25 minutes yesterday, which he considers insufficient to address so many issues, such as his defense.
He added that the prison authorities only allow one lawyer a week, for half an hour.
"The Constitution states that inmates are entitled to have as many lawyers as they want and to have direct communication to address the issues necessary for their defense," Badillo explained.
In July 2015 the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel escaped from the same Altiplano prison where he is kept now through a mile long underground tunnel.
