Los "cataphiles", amantes de las catacumbas, quienes lo recorren de manera ilícita descubren un mundo lleno de polvo, barro y partes inundadas, que sin luz proporciona un silencio especial. A finales del siglo XVIII algunas de las canteras se convirtieron en el Osario Municipal de París. Millones de huesos de cadáveres fueron trasladados a estos compartimientos subterráneos por motivos sanitarios y urbanísticos; se quería desocupar los cementerios para evitar infecciones y tener más superficie para expandir la ciudad. Los cataphiles pueden ser: los profesionales, que bajan las catacumbas regularmente para explorar y cartografiar la infinidad de corredores y grutas; o los visitantes ocasionales que solo bajan de vez en cuando para disfrutar de una velada relajada.
