Journalist Sergio Martínez González was murdered and his wife was injured yesterday, as they were leaving a restaurant in the Tuxtla Chico municipality, in the Mexican border with Guatemala, informed the State's Attorney (FGE).

According to the victim's family and the authorities, Martínez González hadn't worked as a journalist for several years, after closing his newspaper, El Enfoque, to work in the Cacahoatán town hall. Journalist Arnulfo Escobar explained that Martínez was part of journalists' WhatsApp groups and shared news about the border region.

The Attorney of the Costa-Border Region, Ignacio Alejandro Vila Chávez, said that the journalist didn't work as a journalist and that his last activity was as co-owner of a bar, and considered that there aren't elements to consider that this crime is related to his journalistic experience.

He revealed that Martínez was being investigated for his alleged participation in the homicide of Ángel Cifuentes Aguilar, who was supposedly part of the Mara Salvatrucha 13 gang, which took place in Cacahoatán on August 28.

In this regard, a family member, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said that there was a fight with Ángel Cifuentes because he wasn't allowed to enter Martínez's bar, as he was intoxicated.

Sergio Martínezis the 14th journalist murdered this year, according to the CNDH and a report carried out by EL UNIVERSAL. Two journalists have been murdered in Chiapas in less than two months, but the state where most of these crimes take place is Quinta Roo.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) condemned Sergio Martínez González's homicide and requested protective measures to protect his family.
