AMLO's message to the army

In an unprecedented event, the President-elect, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, met with 32,000 soldiers, including the incoming and outgoing Defense and Navy Ministers, and troops. In this context, López Obrador carried out something some have called a “scar operation” with the Armed Forces. First, he said that he trusted the Navy and the Army because they are people with a uniform and explained his National Guard proposal, where soldiers and marines will be key. But what called the attention was the fact that he had a courtesy gesture for the current National Defense Minister, General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, who he criticized during his campaign. Nevertheless, yesterday, the President-elect acknowledged the general's “respectful and institutional” attitude, who, he added, characterizes the army. Many military members claimed that this message for leaders and troops was necessary and that it's timely, just a few days before Mr. Andrés Manuel becomes the Armed Forces' commander in chief.

Anaya supporters throw a fit

Politics are so ironic. For years, Anaya supporters controlled the PAN and the coordination in Congress and the Senate. The same small group leaped from Congress to the party's leadership and then back to Congress. But now, what they used to call democracy, with the new leadership, is authoritarianism. The former PAN president and Senate leader, Damián Zepeda, complained about Rafael Moreno Valle's assignation as the new Senate leader. Mr. Damián said that Morena Valle's appointment is a “serious mistake” that will deeply harm the PAN. We've been told that Mr. Rafael's arrival to the Senate wasn't exempt from obstacles, but that in the end, the bench decided to support him and that they reached a unity agreement. We've been told that only three Senators were missing from this meeting: Josefina Vázquez Mota, who was on an official trip; Gustavo Madero, he stayed home since he's sick, and Damián Zepeda. Zepeda's position is seen as an attempt to undermine the unity agreement. The thing is that while the fight should be outside, the punches and kicks are taking place inside the party.

Harassment case at the INE

Today, the INE's Executive Board might confirm the dismissal of the former Secretariat Director, Jorge Lavoignet, who was accused of sexual harassment. The former official, who received one of the highest salaries in the institution, left but from March to September, when he was removed from office to be investigated, he received his salary of six months, MXN $840,000 without working. With a gross income of MXN $190,195, medical insurance, life insurance, collective retirement insurance, and individual separation insurance, Lavoignet will receive a large sum, thanks to his 17 years in the institution. Of course, he can still go to the Electoral Tribunal to present his case.

The new relationship with the SNTE

It was a busy weekend at the SNTE's General Secretary office, Alfonso Cepeda Salas, since the first meeting between the SNTE leader and the President-elect will take place today, Juan Díaz de la Torre, who resigned on Friday, never held a private meeting with AMLO, in contrast with his predecessor, Elba Esther Gordillo, who met with him last week. It is expected that the future Education Minister, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán will be present. In the agenda they will discuss, among other things, are the bill that will substitute the education reform. This meeting is considered as the first step towards a new relation between the SNTE and López Obrador, who was distant with Mr. Juan, who supported the reform.
