An armed group opened fire at the offices of the state prosecutor and Ministry of Public Safety in Cancun.

According to early reports, at least one police officer was killed and three others were injured in the incident.

Several confrontations were reported at around the same time in several points throughout the city. However, it is not yet known if the incidents were related.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants fled the scene in at least one car and several motorcycles.

Federal, state and municipal police officers have since launched an intense security operation in the area in order to locate the assailants' whereabouts. The state prosecutor's building was cordoned off and several army soldiers were sent to guard the premises.

In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL, a woman who lives close to the prosecutor's office said that at around 5:00pm she and several people with her “fell to the ground when we heard the gunfire. We couldn't see what was going on. It was horrible. At first I thought they were fireworks, but they weren't. Then we heard sirens,” she said.
