8,677 abductions have been reported since Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto was sworn into office 4 years ago.

To put that into perspective, that's 6 kidnappings per day, according to Isabel Miranda de Wallace, president of the association Alto al Secuestro (Put an End to Kidnappings).

The activist said during a press conference that in 2016, there was a 2% increase in abductions compared to 2015.

Most Anti-abduction Units, which is a program that was launched by the current administration, still don't have the human and technological resources, and competitive salaries needed to properly fight this crime, assures Isabel Miranda.

She even claimed during the press conference that many ex-police officers and even active police officers are involved in kidnapping networks, further exasperating the problem.
