Counterfeiters arrested in Tepito, Mexico City

They were found in possession of more than US$29,000 in fake money.

A group of counterfeiters dedicated to the production of fake  banknotes was arrested Monday in the legendary area of Tepito, in Mexico City, by agents from the Office on Special Investigations on Organized Crime (SEIDO) and the Federal Police.

The group operated in the area since at least 2012, according to Gustavo Salas, prosecutor for the SEIDO.

Salas explained that the eight suspects were found in possession of more than US$29,000 in fake 500 and 1,000 pesos notes, which were distributed in Mexico City and the State of Mexico.

According to the director of the Bank of Mexico, Alejandro Alegre Raviela, the five women and three men were responsible for the circulation of 18% of the fake money in the country.

The suspects were also found in possession of half a pound of heroin and 33 pounds of cannabis. They are currently in a federal prison.
