The head of Government of the Federal District, which encompasses Mexico City, Miguel Ángel Mancera, went to the Senate to congratulate lawmakers on a political reform that changes the name of the Mexican capital city.

"I have come to acknowledge the work of the parliamentary groups of all the political parties," expressed Mancera.

"It is a historic day for the city of Mexico, is a big step for the capital," that culminates more than 200 of a reform process, he expressed.

The reform changes the name of the Federal District to Mexico City, as it was widely known anyway, and it also provides it with autonomy equal to the states of the country as well as a constitution.

This constitutional reform was stuck in Congress for at least 15 years, due to the disagreements between the political forces.

Also, the districts on which the city is divided will become mayorships.
