Roman Catholic bishop in the northern state of Coahuila on Friday criticized the state assembly´s approval of a bill to recognize gay unions, calling it an attack on the institution of marriage

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coah. - A Roman Catholic bishop in the northern state of Coahuila on Friday criticized the state assembly´s approval of a bill to recognize gay unions, calling it an attack on the institution of marriage.

Bishop Alonso Gerardo Garza of the city of Piedras Negras, across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas, said the law passed by the Coahuila legislature on Thursday should not be signed into law.

"This law seriously attacks the pillars of society," the bishop told reporters. "We know that many of society´s problems are based on problems of marriage and the family, and we are sure these will grow," if the bill is signed into law.

The measure would provide gay couples with numerous social benefits similar to those of married couples and state Gov. Humberto Moreira is expected to sign the bill into law.
