Violence flared in Acapulco and Nuevo Laredo, while two bodies were found in Michoacán

Drug-related violence surged on Friday with two attacks - one in the coastal city of Acapulco and another in the northern city of Nuevo Laredo - and the discovery of two bodies with the signature signs of drug assassinations in the state of Michoacán.

In Acapulco, assailants lobbed grenades at a police station and a prosecutors´ office early Friday, causing building damage but no serious injuries. The perpetrators escaped without being identified.

Attorney General Daniel Cabeza de Vaca said in a press conference that his office is investigating the incidents, adding that Acapulco has become "a major site for drug trafficking."

The first attack happened about 3 a.m. local time at city police outpost just 50 meters from Acapulco´s main tourist strip, police representative Salvador Vargas Villanueva said.

Police Officer Abel Robledo Reyes received minor cuts from broken glass, but did not need to be hospitalized, Vargas said.

The second attack happened at the offices of the state attorney general´s office in La Garita, the same neighborhood where drug traffickers engaged police in a shootout that left four suspects dead and four police officers wounded on Jan. 27.

On Tuesday, assailants tossed two hand grenades at the home of the city police chief in the Pacific coast resort of Zihuatanejo, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) west of Acapulco, injuring a policeman who was guarding the home. No one was detained in the attack.

OTHER VIOLENT ACTS

In Michoacán, the bodies of two men were found, raising this year´s violent deaths to 46 in the state. Both men had been shot in the head, a trademark of drug-related killings. Neither has been identified.

Before 1 a.m. on Friday, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, armed and hooded men forced their way into a juvenile detention center .

Public security secretary Ives Soberón Tijerina said the assailants broke the locks and stormed inside, firing several rounds and injuring two of the young residents. When police arrived, the assailants had fled.

State attorneys general agreed to promote a new law targeting small-scale drug dealers in an attempt to more effectively combat distribution. The legislation will create a regional database that will combine intelligence information from other agencies.
