CHILPANCINGO, Gro. - A military officer from the state of Mexico was found dead Sunday, his body dumped on the shoulder of the Mexico-Acapulco highway in Guerrero.

According to official sources, Jacinto Pablo Granda, an Army captain, had been kidnapped several hours earlier by unidentified men.

The state prosecutor´s office said Granda´s body was found about 15 kilometers (9 miles) outside of Chilpancingo, the state capital. He was shot twice in the head. Authorities said his body bore no signs of torture.

Granda was assigned to a military base in Zapopan, in the western state of Jalisco, and had been vacationing in Guerrero, according to family members.

Granda´s family said he had been kidnapped off the street in the early hours of the morning, just after he and his wife left a nightclub in downtown Chilpancingo.

Unidentified men reportedly intercepted Granda´s vehicle as he was driving. The kidnappers allowed the officer´s wife to go free.

Authorities said they have no motive for the murder, but were not ruling out the participation of organized crime cartels.

Also in Guerrero, unidentified attackers tossed a hand grenade late Saturday at a police station in the city of Tecpan, damaging two police cars but causing no injuries.

During the past week, Guerrero has seen more than 20 shooting deaths.

A police commander in Acolman, State of Mexico, was also killed Saturday night as he played a game of soccer.

According to witnesses, two assailants approached the police officer, and without saying a word, opened fire.

The two suspects sped away on a motorcycle.
