Through Coursera, Mexico's National Autonomous University will offer a specialized AI program

Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM), in cooperation with Coursera, the largest online higher education platform in the world, has recently launched a specialized education program called “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” through which the prestigious university will seek to address the growing demand for knowledge in the field among Mexican professionals.

Not only has Artificial Intelligence (AI) profoundly impacted several aspects of our daily life, such as entertainment, online shopping, banking, and customer service, but it will also account for 30% of digital transformation initiatives in Latin America by 2019, according to a study conducted by the IDC. Said report predicts that by 2020, around 50% of business applications will use this type of technology. As a result, more and more companies have searched for new talents with knowledge of artificial intelligence technologies.

This growing demand for skills on AI drove UNAM to develop the “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” program, which was designed for beginners. Taught entirely in Spanish, the eight-course program encompasses: Artificial reasoning, problem resolution by search, artificial creativity, and hybrid cognition, providing both theoretical and practical tools that will offer students a broad comprehension of the various branches of Artificial Intelligence, such as cognitive sciences –psychology, neurophysiology, linguistics, and philosophy- which can help us build more sophisticated intelligence systems. Thus, upon finishing the program, students will be able to analyze problems in a variety of AI fields, acquiring tools that they can use in a professional environment.

The program was launched in the framework of Coursera Español’s third anniversary. Dr. Carlos Gershenson, a researcher from UNAM, and professor of this new field, pointed out that, though Mexico has a 50 year history of AI research, this is the first time that the study of AI will transcend academic and scientific spaces. “There is a very large demand of AI experts in the job market. This is why we decided to create this program, to offer professional advantages and fill the voids in this field of study. There is no doubt that, the greater the number of AI specialists in Mexico, the more benefits it will bring to our country.”
