International solidarity after Mexico's devastating earthquake

Only twelve days after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico minutes before midnight on Thursday, September 7, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico on Tuesday, September 19.

The epicenter was located just 120km from Mexico City in the limits between neighboring states of Puebla and Morelos and it hit the country on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake which caused over 10,000 deaths as well as extensive material losses and damage in Mexico City.

Leaders and public officials around the world have expressed their solidarity for Mexico after the 7.1 quake.

On Twitter, the British Embassy in Mexico shared a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada wrote:

While Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister shared a statement following the earthquake sending condolences to families and friends in mourning:

Roberta Jacobson, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, wrote in Spanish: "I express solidarity with Mexico's people. We are with you. Strenght and resilience to relatives and victims of the earthquake."

While Heather Nauert, U.S. Department of State spokeswoman shared an official statement regarding the earthquake in Mexico:

The German embassy in Mexico shared on its Facebook page a statement in Spanish from Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany reading "Solidarity with Mexico. Our condolences to those who lost a loved one. Encouragement to rescue teams."

Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, sent his condolences Mexico, on behalf of the people of Ireland:

Emmanuel Macron, President of France wrote in Spanish: "Support to Enrique Peña Nieto and to the Mexican people. Today, in sadness by your side, tomorrow with you, firmly in the reconstruction".

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel wrote:

Malala wrote:"Estoy rezando por México / sending my prayers to México."

Donald Trump, President of The United States; Mariano Rajoy Brey, Prime Minister of Spain; Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile; Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, President of Peru; Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia; Juan Carlos Varela, President of Panama; Lenín Moreno, President of Ecuador; Juan Orlando H., President of Honduras, and Jimmy Morales, President of Guatemala expressed their concern after the 7.1 earthquake.
