Mexican film director Alejandro González Iñárritu was awarded one of the most important distinctions in the world. Yesterday, the Mexican filmmaker was named Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government for his contributions to arts and culture.

This distinction is awarded by the French Republic to “artists, writers, or intellectuals who have distinguished themselves for their creations in the artistic and literary world or for their contributions to arts and letters in France and the world.”

But Iñárritu is not the first Mexican to receive this honor, other Mexicans who are part of the order include actress María Félix, tenor Rolando Villazón, writer Jorge Volpi, and writer Rubén Marshall, among others.

Latin Americans who have received the order include Jorge Luis Borges, Ernesto Sabato, José Donoso, Mario Vargas Llosa, Juanes, and Quino.
