Many hours, ink, and paper have been used to talk about several issues which have come up from the electoral campaigns. Some of the main topics which have been heavily discussed by public opinion are the construction of the new international airport for Mexico City, pensions for former presidents, marihuana legalization, the fight against corruption and insecurity…

These are all important matters but how relevant are they to the so-called common man? The people who wake up every day to go to work – or find a job –, whose interest in politics is minimum as they are more concerned about earning enough to support their families?

And we can go further than that: the most talked-about topics, are these the ones young Mexicans are interested in?

For the July 1st elections, 40% of the electorate is made up by 35 million Mexican citizens between the ages 18 to 34, and 14 million of them will be will vote for the first time.

EL UNIVERSAL has asked 30 outstanding youths in their respective discipline – one per state – their opinions on politics, the elections, candidates, and their needs. Replies were varied but corruption and insecurity were also part of the constant topics discussed. However, a good part of them was also interested in knowing the candidate's projects regarding sciences, technology, sports, and culture.

The disenchantment towards political parties and politics was made clear with phrases such as “none of the parties represents the values and ideas of its members,” “the political class is incompetent,” “most candidates have an unreliable past,” “many of the problems arise from politics”…

This feeling isn't exclusive of the young ones but one shared by many areas and sectors of the population.

How can the young people become interested in campaigns? In the answers of our interviewees, we can find the path: to have their talents be taken into account, to improve education, to give them access to better jobs and salaries.

However, it won't be enough for political parties and candidates to get closer to ordinary citizens and hear their problems, we need viable solutions that provide results. Campaign proposals and promises need to be more than offers. How many of the promises made by the candidates during their campaigns will become a reality? Nothing contributes more to disenchantment than seeing administrations come and go without noticing improvements in the every-day life of millions of Mexicans.

And nothing will go more against a democratic society than having our younger generations unwilling to participate in Mexico's public life.
