Starting today and throughout the weekend, the Cantoya Fest will delight audiences in the Magical Town of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán . On its 13th edition , the festival will feature a monumental sky lantern contest, exhibitions, and workshops for learning to make your own sky lantern.

This type of lantern is made out of tissue paper, glue, and thread which can be combined in a million colors, sizes, and shapes. During the Cantoya Fest, there will be around 1,500 sky lanterns , 95% of which will be made out of biodegradable materials . There will be participants coming from different cities such as Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz , as well as people from the host state. There will also be sky lanterns from Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, France, and Portugal .

This edition’s theme will be Pre-Hispanic codices and there will be more than 200 sky lanterns .

In addition to the main contest, there will be musical presentations, clowns, and storytellers, as well as a gastronomic sampling of traditional food by local chefs .
