Mexico’s “Sembrando Vida(Sowing Life) Program presented by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador will begin in 2019, generating 220 thousand jobs in the states of Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco, and Campeche. The affiliated growers will be offered a wage of 5,000 pesos a month.

The governors of Campeche and Yucatán, Alejandro Moreno and Mauricio Vila, as well as the elected governors of Veracruz, Tabasco, and Chiapas were present at the presentation of the program, in which the Welfare Secretary, María Luisa Albores, explained that the goal was to plant one million fruit and timber trees in 19 states of the country, giving permanent jobs to 400,000 people.

According to the program, growers will be paid 4,500 pesos a month while another 500 will be put in a savings fund to support local communities.

During the meeting, the environmental expert Víctor Manuel Toledo rejected the use of transgenic maize and soy products.

Most species to be planted are coffee, cocoa, maize, mahogany, cinnamon, and agave, among others.
