A group of Catholic Bishops from various parts of Mexico concentrated in the central state of San Luis Potosí for a "mega-exorcism" to "plead with God" to get rid of the evil and violence chocking the country, according to the Archbishop Emeritus of Guadalajara, Juan Sandoval Íñiguez.

He expressed that the exorcism, the first of its kind in the entire world, was conducted behind closed doors on May 20, in the state cathedral of San Luis Potosí.

The ritual was headed by state bishop Carlos Cabrero and Sandoval Íñiguez, and the other eight exorcists of the country, as well as Spanish demonologist Antonio Fortea, participated in the rituals.

According to the prelate, this would be the first exorcism in the world focused on "expelling the evil one" from an entire nation and not from a particular person.

He explained that the priests prayed for peace and for keeping "the forces of evil from prevailing" in Mexico, a country whose corruption "leads to poverty for thousands of people," he said.

He stated that, according to the belief of the priests, evil "entered Mexico" after the decriminalization of abortion in Mexico City.

"The door opened for the demon in Mexico is the legalization of abortion," expressed the Bishop Emeritus for whom this fact constitutes "an immense failure because it legalizes homicides".

Compared to the victims who were killed by members of the drug cartels, the unborn children are "quartered within the womb of their mothers," he said.

Sandoval Íñiguez is known for his fierce opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion.
